Manchester has produced some of the greatest players in the history of the game. From George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton to Denis Law and Eric Cantona, Manchester United has a long list of legends who have graced the pitch at Old Trafford. Similarly, Manchester City has had its share of great players, with the likes of honorary Mancunians Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta having been instrumental in the club's recent success.

The city of Manchester is also home to a number of successful clubs in the lower divisions of English football. Bolton Wanderers, Oldham Athletic, Rochdale and Wigan Athletic are all based in Greater Manchester and have all had varying levels of success in their respective leagues.

Manchester is also home to a number of successful women's football teams. Manchester City Women and Manchester United Women both play in the top division of the Women's Super League, while Stockport County Ladies, FA Women's National League Division One North champions in 2017, also call Manchester home.
